Ski Mountaineering

UP TO THE F.CHABOD HUT IN SPRING TIME

Ascent: 916
Hiking time: 2h 30
Level of difficulty: MS
From the parking in Pravieux (m 1834) cross the stream Savara and follow the way up to the pasture Pravieux. First cross the larches wood along a large mule-track with narrow turnings, after three long diagonals you’ll reach the pasture in Lavassey (m 2194) in about 50 minutes.
From Lavassey turn to the right for about 100 meters, then go up along short turnings to the left and cross the wood until a small plan.
From there continue in the large depression till 2600 metres. Then turn to the left approaching the rocky wall and reach the hut on a small peak. (do not enter the final valley in case of copious snow)

UP TO THE GRAN PARADISO IN SPRINGTIME

Gran Paradiso, ordinary via
Level of difficulty: BSA
The rising on this side is actually more alpinist due to the milieu you encounter and therefore more attention is needed as more crevasses are encountered than on the classic route starting from the refuge Vittorio Emanuele.
Leaving the hut passing the winter building, continue on the shoulder forward Montandayne until 3100 metres. Now continue diagonally under the base of Piccolo Paradiso then under the north face of Gran Paradiso directed to the mound at 3300 metres on the head of Moncorvé (from here you can go down to the refuge Vittorio Emanuele), leaving on your right the area full of crevasses. Afterwards climb up while bearing right until you reach the “schiena d’asino” (donkey’s back), where the trail leading up from the Vittorio Emanuele refuge intersects.
Then bear left toward Montcorvé pass and while staying on the left side climb up the steep slope which after crossing the final crevasse and the nearby rocks leads up to the summit where is standing the “Madonnina” of Gran Paradiso (m 4061).
Take the same route when descending or return to the “Schiena d”Asino” and head left to the refuge Vittorio Emanuele.

SBERNA BIVOUAC, NEYRON PASS, EAUX ROUSSES IN SPRINGTIME

Sberna bivouac, Neyron pass m 3414 descent to Eaux Rousses
Level of difficulty: to the bivouac MSA – descent to Eaux Rousses BSA
From Chabod walk past the winter building and continue in the same direction up until the foot of the Montandayné glacier. Start climbing the glacier, moving in a wide semicircle-type pattern until you reach the final slope of the Neyron pass (terrain type mixed at times), where the bivouac is located.
The bivouac has six sleeping spaces. To hike down from the bivouac, either follow the way you came. Alternatively, continue along the same ridge towards the north-west face until you can make out an easy passage that passes over the final crevasse of the Grand Neyron glacier. Climb your way down the glacier, first towards the centre, then towards the right until you reach the upper Leviona pasture (m 2663). Then towards the left till the lower Leviona (m 2303). From here descend to Eaux Rousses (m 1666).

Montandayne via Bonney pass

Level of difficulty: BSA
From Chabod walk past the winter building and continue in the same direction up until the foot of the Montandayné glacier. Start climbing up the glacier, moving in a wide semicircle-type pattern until you reach the final slope of the Neyron pass (terrain type mixed at times), where the Sberna bivouac is located.
At the bottom of the final slope, which leads to the bivouac Sberna and to the Gran Neyron pass, start hiking crossways up the steep stony pathway until you reach the Bonney pass (m 3587). Next step is the descent towards the Tsasset glacier. So take the pass on the right-hand side, and make your way down the narrow path, which provides an easy way down to the glacier. Head right and climb back up the glacier, sloping round slightly until you reach the final crevasse. From here climb back up straight towards the ridge and cross over the snow mass. After some minutes of climbing, you will reach the summit (m 3838).
Use the same route for descent.
